We get a call from an old friend and classmate, asking for us to renovate their existing home in Houston. We jumped at the opportunity to reconnect and did we mention that they have great taste?! Nestled within the historic Houston Heights neighborhood, this project sought to retain the character of the local vernacular while simultaneously expanding to suit the needs of a growing young family. As with many residential additions, the dilemma of what to retain and what to renew was at the forefront of the design process. Fortunately, the size of the site allowed for ample room to erect a secondary accessory dwelling structure – an opportunity to create dialogue with the original building. Here, a craftsman-esque bungalow typology is juxtaposed with a contemporary, clean jewel box of a garage/apartment combination. On the primary building, the loftiness of the roof pitch was utilized to expand the home with a second story, yet the profile itself lended to a minor intervention as viewed from the exterior. The resulting forms expanded greatly on the original footprint all while preserving the historic nature of the property.
